Cultural Activities

School Musicals

Our school holds a proud tradition of producing a polished musical delivered in a ‘real theatre’ environment for the students to experience the thrill of performing on a live stage. Productions have been tremendously successful popular, thanks to the many voluntary hours given by staff and parents, either through direct involvement or through assisting with costuming, props and scenery. Musicals are held every second year. In 2007, “Conundrum” was staged at the Tabard Theatre with Year 5 and 6 students.

In 2009 we took a different approach with “Alice: The Musical”. 285 students in Years One to Six performed at the Municipal Theatre before a capacity audience of 1000 proud parents, grandparents, relatives and supporters. In August 2010, we are already looking ahead to the 2011 production.

Choir

We have a very strong school choir which meets regularly during the school year to practice songs to present at assemblies and at special events such as the Suzanne Prentice ‘Kids for Kids Concerts’ held biennially, the annual Early Childhood amd Senior Citizens/ Grandparents Concerts and December's ‘Christmas in (Anderson)Park’.Every year, together with the orchestra, the choir has a cultural exchange with Waipukurau School and performances for kindergartens and early childhood centres.

Orchestra

The school provides the opportunity for children to learn musical instruments, to enable them to participate in the School Orchestra. One of the particular attributes of our school is the promotion of the orchestra which plays at the annual Early Childhood and Senior Citizens/Grandparents Concert and busks in Emerson Street shortly before Christmas. Donations from busking are given to the Christmas Cheer Fund. Although usually confined to Year 5 and 6 pupils, if numbers allow, some Year 4 children can be included.

Kapahaka: In 2010 we have begun a strong and vocal Kapahaka group who have performed in assemblies and special occasions.
